BeaverTails Food Truck on Lakeshore Road West

Driving west along Lakeshore this week I was surprised to see a BeaverTails truck in the parking lot of a condo building. I thought perhaps someone had parked it there for the night, but it turns out it’s set up there for the summer.

This Beavertails food truck is just west of Johnsons Lane on the north side of Lakeshore. It was an unexpected sight because there isn’t much along that particular stretch of road, which is close to Jack Darling, our favourite dog park.

A BeaverTail is a Canadian pastry dessert made from whole wheat dough that is stretched out and flattened into the shape of a beaver’s tail, then fried until it becomes crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The pastry is then topped with a variety of sweet toppings, such as cinnamon and sugar, chocolate and hazelnut spread, maple butter, apple cinnamon, or sometimes even savoury toppings like cheese and garlic butter.

Killaloe Sunrise BeaverTail

The BeaverTail was first created in Ottawa, Ontario in 1978 by Pam and Grant Hooker. It has since become a popular Canadian dessert, with several BeaverTail stands located across the country. You’ll often find BeaverTails at festivals, fairs, and outdoor events like the C.N.E. The first time I had one was skating on the Rideau Canal in Ottawa; they have a stand set up right on the ice. There is a permanent BeaverTails location on the waterfront in downtown Toronto at 145 Queens Quay West.

My favourite is the Killaloe Sunrise, which is cinnamon, sugar and lemon which you squeeze all over the pastry. I’ve tried most of the flavours but always come back to this one. It’s named for the first time a BeaverTail made its public appearance, which was in 1978 at the Killaloe Craft and Community Fair.

This BeaverTails food truck is hiring; details below. Considering BeaverTails trucks and stands are usually located at very busy events, this would be a pretty idyllic one to work at, situated in a peaceful parking lot in a forested area close to the waterfront. 1575 Lakeshore Rd. West, Mississauga.
