Shelby’s Legendary Shawarma, a popular shawarma chain born in London, Ontario, is opening not one, not two, but three new locations in Toronto at Queen St. West, Bloor and Bathurst and Bloor West Village.
Shelby’s Shawarma offers a diverse menu that combines traditional Middle Eastern flavours with global influences. Their signature shawarma includes options like marinated chicken, beef, or lamb served in wraps or plates with a choice of sauces and toppings. Vegetarian options feature flavourful falafels including falafel tacos. They also serve Saj Bread, a thin and soft Middle Eastern flatbread. A popular item is their Shawarma Poutine, which combines crispy fries, shawarma meat, gravy, and cheese curds.
All Shelby’s locations ensure that their meats are 100% certified hand-slaughtered Halal. Each location holds a Halal certificate issued by The Islamic Society of North America. Founded by Yazan and Yasser, two friends with a shared passion for their Middle Eastern roots and authentic cuisine, the idea for Shelby’s started by selling their mom’s traditional chicken shawarma recipe from a humble food trailer in Lambeth, Ontario. Their success led them to realize their business potential and since its opening in London in 2015, the first Shelby’s restaurant quickly gained popularity and has since expanded to multiple locations throughout Ontario. Shelby’s can now be found in London, Hamilton, St. Catharines, St. Thomas, Strathroy, Windsor, and the GTA. There is also a location at Laval University in Quebec. The first Toronto location of Shelby’s opened in January in Rexdale (in the west end of Toronto) at 2140 Kipling Avenue.
Shelby’s holds a Guinness World Record for creating the largest shawarma ever made. In July 2019, they made history in London, Ontario, by crafting a record-breaking chicken shawarma wrap at the Ribfest festival. This extraordinary wrap consisted of 50 kilograms of chicken, 10 kilograms of pickles, 16 liters of garlic sauce, 10 kilograms of fries, and 150 saj breads. It measured an impressive 152’3″ in length.
Shelby’s has also gained a devoted following on TikTok, where their hilarious and wholesome videos have attracted over 1.5 million followers.
