Under Construction: Orwell’s Becomes Má Cannabis

After nearly four decades in business, Etobicoke’s cherished bar Orwell’s closed its doors permanently last year, marking the end of an era that began in 1984. After reviewing the building permit number in the Status of Current Cannabis Retail Store Applications, it appears that Orwell’s is undergoing construction to become a location of Má Cannabis. It’s right next door to the recently opened Belly Buster.

Má, the selected name for the upcoming cannabis shop, comes from the oldest recorded word for cannabis found in Chinese medical texts dating back over 2500 years. It pays homage to the founders’ heritage and the rich history of cannabis, which has long been revered for its ability to provide relief and wellness to the mind, body, and spirit.

The cannabis store application status page states that the public notice period for Má Cannabis ended on April 10th, 2023. The public notice period is a crucial phase in the Cannabis Retail Store Authorization application process. During this period, the applicant must display a placard on the proposed store front for 15 calendar days. This serves to inform the public about the application and provides an opportunity for them to submit written concerns to the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario. Once the public notice period ends, the deadline for submissions has passed, and the AGCO will proceed to review the application and any received submissions.

Má Cannabis is located at 3373 Bloor Street West, Etobicoke, Toronto.
