Sounds of Toronto: This Week in Concerts

50 Cent: The Final Lap Tour

There was nobody bigger than 50 Cent when “Get Rich or Die Tryin’” came out twenty years ago.  Now the legendary rapper brings what may be his final tour to Toronto for the first of his Canadian dates.  This city has a special connection for the rapper because it is also partly where the movie “Get Rich or Die Tryin’” was filmed.  On this tour 50 Cent is bringing Busta Rhymes with him who is of course another New York star who was huge in the same era.

This tour appears to revolve more around 50 Cent’s greatest hits than any new stuff which should also go over big with fans.  Especially those celebrating a birthday and plan to party like it’s their birthday.

50 Cent is at the Budweiser Stage on Monday July 31st.

Boy George & Culture Club

At the same venue the next night are legends of an earlier time.  Culture Club was my first concert ever.  I think I was 11 or 12 but who can say for sure.  I also have the album “Kissing to be Clever” on vinyl from that time.  That came out 40 years ago and while musically they were always ahead of their time, it’s nice to see how well their songs have aged.

They are now known as “Boy George & Culture Club” which I guess helps the rare fan of Culture Club who didn’t realize Boy George was their singer?

The band is playing 25 cities and are promising all the hits so you can expect the crowd to be belting out songs like “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?” and “Karma Chameleon”.

Boy George & Culture Club play Budweiser Stage on Tuesday August 1st.  Berlin is the opening act.

The Veld Music Festival

Veld calls itself the “definitive Canadian electronic music festival experience” with 60 international dance and hip-hop acts performing over three days.

The lineup is impressive.  Among the many performers are Zedd, Canadians Loud Luxury, and Tiesto, the Dutch DJ and music producer who treats partying like a business.

Veld takes places at Downsview Park in Toronto from August 4th-6th.
