Sounds of Toronto: This Week in Concerts

LIONEL RICHIE & EARTH, WIND AND FIRE: Tuesday August 8th, 2023 at Scotiabank Arena

Will people be dancing on the ceiling all night long? Probably many of his fans would like to be home at a decent hour at this point, but Lionel Richie is planning to rock the Scotiabank Arena on Tuesday. To me Lionel Richie is always the guy behind “Running with the Night” but he is actually a lot of things to a lot of people. Singer for The Commodores on some of their biggest hits, 80s popstar, father of Nicole, American Idol judge, and as we recently found out at the Coronation he’s also a friend of King Charles apparently. Richie is playing with legends “Earth, Wind & Fire” on what’s being called the “Sing a Song All Night Tour” which makes it sound like they are playing together more than a headliner and opening act.

ELECTRIC ISLAND: Friday and Saturday August 11 & 12 at Woodbine Park

If 3 days of Veld weren’t enough for you, or if you missed it and regret not going, you don’t have to wait long for another electronic music festival. Electric Island kicks of at Woodbine park this weekend with 29 acts on 3 stages over 2 days. The names may not be as big as at Veld, but I’m told it has a great vibe and is a lot of fun. There are four events in the Electric Island calendar and this is the third one. There will also be one in September at Fort York. Here’s a taste of what the event in July was like.

JAMES BAY: Saturday August 12th at History

Still in the Beaches area, but with a whole different vibe, James Bay will be at History.  The British singer-songwriter seemed like he was really going to break out about a decade ago but while his career has been perhaps a little under the radar he has toured with Taylor Swift, The Rolling Stones, and Ed Sheeran, and has been nominated for a Grammy, so maybe I’m not giving him enough credit.  He certainly had a huge hit with “Let it Go”.

AFROJACK: Sunday August 13th at Cabana Pool Bar

Afrojack, just like many other famous EDM DJs, is from the Netherlands and he’s heading to Toronto next weekend. With his unique sound and captivating performances, he has gained a huge fanbase worldwide. Born Nick van de Wall, he has been a part of a number of massive hits over the past few years, and the Cabana Pool Bar show is a chance to see him mix up close.
