Amália Rodrigues Mural in Little Portugal

This artwork in Little Portugal is part of an international project honouring the life and contributions of the renowned Portuguese artist, Amália Rodrigues, known as the ‘Rainha do Fado’ (Queen of Fado). Rodrigues, through her successful career, toured the world and elevated the iconic Portuguese sound to international recognition. The mural was created by Montreal artist Matthew Cadoch in collaboration with the Little Portugal Toronto BIA.

Fado is a traditional Portuguese music genre that emerged in the early 19th century in Lisbon. It is often characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics, expressing themes of longing, nostalgia, and often the hardships of daily life. Typically performed with a singer accompanied by Portuguese and classical guitars, fado has a distinct melancholic and emotive quality.

This tribute is part of a larger initiative that includes another mural at the Portuguese Cultural Center of Mississauga located at 53 Queen St N. The murals are a beautiful commemorations of Amália Rodrigues’ enduring legacy and her role in bringing Portuguese fado to the global stage. 1087 Dundas St. West, Toronto.
