Jose Bautista Bat Flip Mural in downtown Toronto
Jose Bautista Mural, February 2024

Seeing this amazing mural under a finally sunny sky in downtown Toronto was a reminder that spring training is less than two weeks away. Whenever I would complain about the dreary winter days, this is how my dad would remind me warmth is just around the corner… by counting down the days to the Jays. Pitchers and catchers report for their first workout on February 15th, and the first day of Blue Jays spring training is February 24th.

The Blue Jays 2024 schedule has this year’s baseball season kicking off on March 28 at TD Ballpark Dunedin against the Tampa Bay Rays. With a combination of seasoned veterans and rising stars, the 2024 Blue Jays season holds the promise of some intense matchups, and hopefully moments as memorable as the one captured in this mural…

Justin Turner Joins the Squad

The team has been making moves to ensure a strong lineup, including the signing of veteran designated hitter Justin Turner. Turner, joining on a one-year, $13 million US contract, is expected to bring both power and experience to the roster.

He showcased impressive offensive stats last season, including a .800 OPS, .276 batting average, and 23 home runs. His arrival adds depth to the lineup and provides a veteran presence.

Centre-fielder Kevin Kiermaier and reliever Chad Green are back. Let’s take a closer look at these two favourites:

Kevin Kiermaier made a remarkable impact during his 2023 season with the Blue Jays. Initially known for his defensive prowess, Kiermaier surprised everyone by contributing significantly on offense. His stats included 58 runs, 21 doubles, 6 triples, 8 home runs, and a .265 batting average. But it was his stellar defense that truly set him apart. Playing 127 games in center field, he logged 981.1 innings with only 3 errors and an impressive .989 fielding percentage. Kiermaier’s 18 Defensive Runs Saved ranked second on the team, and he even won the 2023 Fielding Bible Award for best defensive centre fielder.

Meanwhile, Chad Green, the reliable reliever, returns to bolster the Blue Jays bullpen. His 152 Defensive Runs Saved highlight his impact beyond the mound. With both Kiermaier and Green back, the Blue Jays are poised for an exciting season. Fans eagerly await their contributions as the team aims for postseason success once again.

Interleague Play

Fans can look forward to exciting interleague play as the Blue Jays take on the NL West. In April, they will host the Colorado Rockies and the Los Angeles Dodgers, while later in the season, they’ll visit the San Francisco Giants, the Arizona Diamondbacks, and the San Diego Padres.

Colorado Rockies: The Blue Jays hosting the Rockies will be a clash of styles. The Rockies are known for their high-altitude home field advantage, which often leads to high-scoring games. Fans can expect some thrilling offense during this series.

Los Angeles Dodgers: The Dodgers are perennial contenders and have a strong fan base. When they visit Toronto, it’ll be a marquee matchup. The Blue Jays will need to bring their A-game to compete against the 2020 World Series champions.

San Francisco Giants: The Giants have a rich history and have won multiple championships in recent years. Their visit to Toronto will be a chance for fans to see top-tier baseball and witness some of the game’s best players in action.

Arizona Diamondbacks: The Diamondbacks may not always be in the spotlight, but they have talented players and can surprise opponents. Their clash with the Blue Jays will be an opportunity for both teams to prove themselves.

San Diego Padres: The Padres are an exciting young team with stars like Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado. Their matchup against the Blue Jays promises fireworks and could be a highlight of the season.

Special Dates

Mark your calendars for special celebrations at the Rogers Centre. The Blue Jays will commemorate Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, facing off against the Minnesota Twins on May 12 and the Cleveland Guardians on June 16. Additionally, two long weekends in Toronto will feature matchups against the Chicago White Sox on Victoria Day (May 20) and the Houston Astros on Canada Day (July 1).
