Winter Stations Toronto 2024 at Woodbine Beach

Winter Stations 2024 Winner: Bobbin’ Team: University of Waterloo School of Architecture

Toronto beaches are not the first place you think of heading to during the colder seasons, and I think that’s why this event has captured the imagination of the city for a decade. Winter Stations has been transforming Toronto’s east end beaches into a winter art wonderland since it launched in 2014. Each year, this competition invites the international design and art community to turn the existing lifeguard towers across Kew and Woodbine beaches into temporary winter art installations.

The lifeguard stations, which are not in use in the wintertime, are considered visual anchor points for the installations. The competition is open to everyone in the world and there is no fee to enter.

There have been entries from more than 90 countries over the years and it is remarkable to see what these talented people create. Here is one of the 2024 winners, Nimbus by landscape architect David Stein.

And look at this one, it’s just incredible. It’s called Winteraction and it’s a Canadian and Iranian collaboration between the University of Guelph Department of Landscape Architecture and Ashari Architects.

2024 marks the tenth year of Winter Stations in the east end, and so the theme for this year’s installations is “Resonance”, inviting design teams to breathe new life into cherished installations from Winter Stations of the past. There are seven new installations accompanied by the return of two stations from last year. Most of the 2024 stations have been designed by Canadian architects/design teams. You can read about the other winners of the 2024 competition and see an archive of the past installations here.
