Brooklyn Deli Owner Brings the Ocky Way to Habibz Corner on Jane

Chopped Cheese Made The Ocky Way Comes To Toronto For One Day

General Ock, also known as Rahim Mohamed, is the 33-year-old Yemeni American owner of The Red Hook Food Corp at 603 Clinton Street in New York City. This corner deli sits on the edge of Red Hook, a neighbourhood in Brooklyn surrounded by shipping yards and civil war-era warehouses. The name ‘General Ock’ pays tribute to Rahim’s native Yemen: “It’s brother in Arabic, this is the brother way.” His deli is where he creates his sandwiches “The Ocky Way.”

General Ock has gained immense popularity on TikTok for his wild sandwich creations. His signature style involves whipping up fun and unconventional combinations, such as bacon-egg-and-cheese sandwiches stuffed between red velvet pancakes. When customers challenge him with oddball requests, he rises to the occasion. He asks them about their preferences, allergies, and flavour profiles, and then crafts something entirely new each time.

These eye-catching creations have attracted customers from all over the world, all eager to experience their meal “the Ocky Way” and snap a photo with the man himself. Here’s General Ock in action whipping up a pastrami, egg and cheese on Jamaican patties with hot Cheetos:

On Saturday, if you were in the Jane and Lawrence area of Toronto you likely saw a HUGE line out front of Habibz Corner at 1806 Jane Street. That’s because for one day, General Ock brought the Ocky Way to this location and once the word spread, everyone was lining up for a taste of the legendary sandwiches and exclusive merch. Habibz Corner is an eatery with five locations across the GTA offering Halal fusion street food including burgers, poutines, and chicken platters.

General Ock made a name for himself with his unique take on the chopped cheese sandwich. Let’s dive into the flavourful world of General Ock’s chopped cheese, starting with some basics:

What Is a Chopped Cheese?

The chopped cheese is a beloved New York City classic, especially popular in bodegas and delis. It typically consists of minced beef (ground beef) cooked with onions, peppers, and spices, all piled onto a soft roll. The sandwich is then topped with melted cheese and sometimes garnished with lettuce, tomato, and condiments.

General Ock takes the humble chopped cheese to a whole new level with his signature flair. He follows the same basic concept but adds his own twist by incorporating unexpected ingredients and creative combinations. Here is Quavo experiencing a BBQ Chopped Cheese made the Ocky Way:
